Dus Mahavidyas of Devi Parvati or Shakti goddess

In our Vedic Culture, Devi Parvati, who is also known as adi Shakti or Shakti goddess, has 10 forms of vidyas in her, which depicts different forms of feminine power and intellect. These 10 forms of vidyas has fearful kali on one side and feminine kamala on the other, revealing power of woman. It is also believed that Mahadev is the only Vidyapati and forgetting his name could disappear all these 10 forms of vidyas.

Another story about origin of these 10 forms is: Adi Shakti was born as Devi Sati to Daksh Prajapati and later as Devi Parvati to Him Naresh in order to reunite with Mahadev. Devi Sati's father Prajapati Daksh considers Mahadev as his enemy. He was against to the marriage of Sati with Mahadev. But it is destined and so this marriage took place. After some time, Prajapati Daksh had announced a Mahayajna, to which every deity is invited excluding Mahadev and Sati. Sati came to know about yajna from Narad Muni and decided to go there without invitation. Mahadev tried to stop her in many ways and said that going there without invitation will result in unfruitful results and disrespect.

Sati had a view that a daughter need not to be invited as it is her father's yajna. She could go without invitation and there is no harm in it. She thought that Mahadev is treating her as a child and not as a Mother of Universe. She decided to show her real form. Mahadev and all universe began to shake. Mahadev tried to flee from there but Adi Shakti (Sati) multiplied herself in 10 different forms and interrupts his way from every side showing her power in full bloom. In this way, Dasa-Mahavidyas came into existence.

On other side, Mahadev is the only vidyapati and he has given Great Wisdom to the world in these 10 forms of Mahavidyas. These 10 forms have also made possible Dashm Avatars of Lord Vishnu.

Dus = Ten;  Maha = Great;  Vidya = Wisdom
